Driving test swap guide: how learner-to-learner test swaps work

A practical, safety-first guide to possible matches, DVSA timing and location rules, privacy and the steps learners complete themselves.

Quick answer

What people mean by a driving test swap

Two learners who already have practical car tests booked may be able to exchange appointments when each wants what the other has. A compatible date is only the start: timing, test type, extra-time needs and the permitted test-centre rules must work for both bookings.

Read the short step-by-step swap guide or check the different-centre rules.

What a driving test swap actually is

It is a learner-to-learner exchange between two existing appointments, not a cancellation finder or a paid slot sale. One learner may want an earlier test while another needs more time to practise.

Exchange Driving Tests identifies possible matches only. It does not book, change, cancel or swap a test for anyone.

The safe matching process

  1. A learner submits basic test details and preferences.
  2. The listing is manually reviewed for possible compatibility.
  3. Both learners are contacted separately if a possible match is found.
  4. No learner details are shared unless both agree first.
  5. The learners check the latest rules and complete any official process themselves through DVSA.

The 10 full working day rule

DVSA guidance says a swap must be requested at least 10 full working days before the earliest of the two tests. Monday to Saturday count as working days; Sundays and public holidays do not.

A promising match may still be too close to one appointment. Use the 10 working day checker, then confirm the latest guidance on GOV.UK.

What not to share

  • Do not share your DVSA login.
  • Do not post your driving licence number.
  • Do not post your theory certificate number.
  • Do not send payment card details.
  • Do not pay a stranger for a test slot.

Why later-date learners matter

A two-way exchange needs someone with an earlier date who wants more preparation time. If your test is too soon, your appointment may be the other half of a useful match.

Read the test-too-soon guide.

Useful for driving instructors

This guide gives pupils a safer explanation of matching, timing, permitted locations, privacy and what not to share online. Driving schools are welcome to link to it as a learner resource.

See the instructor resource page for a shorter explanation to share with pupils.

Common questions

Can you swap driving tests with another learner?

A swap may be possible when both learners already have a car test booked and want each other’s appointment, and the timing, test type, extra-time needs and permitted test-centre rules work for both bookings.

Can Exchange Driving Tests swap it for me?

No. The service only identifies possible matches. It does not access DVSA, book, change, cancel or complete swaps.

Does a possible match guarantee a successful swap?

No. Both learners must agree, satisfy the applicable booking rules and complete the official process themselves.

Why is the site free?

The project is a free pilot designed to build trust and test demand without selling test slots.

Check for a possible match

Submit your practical test details for free. Listings are manually reviewed, email addresses are not displayed publicly, and details are only shared after both learners agree.
