Complete driving test swap guide

A practical, safety-first guide for learners who want to understand driving test swaps, date exchanges and the DVSA 10 full working day rule.

What a driving test swap actually is

A driving test swap is when two learners already have practical driving tests booked and both prefer the other learner's exact date, time and test centre. It is not the same as a cancellation finder, and it is not a paid slot sale.

For a real learner-to-learner driving test date exchange, both people need to want what the other person has. Someone with a later test may want an earlier date, while someone with a test too soon may want more time to practise.

Exchange Driving Tests helps identify possible matches only. It does not book, change, cancel or swap a test for anyone.

The safe matching process

  1. A learner submits basic test-date information.
  2. The listing is checked against other learners' date ranges.
  3. If there may be a match, both learners are contacted separately.
  4. No details are shared unless both people agree first.
  5. The learners complete any official process themselves through DVSA.

The 10 full working day rule

One important part of the swap process is timing. DVSA guidance says the swap must be requested at least 10 full working days before the earliest of the two tests. Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays do not count.

This matters because a swap that looks perfect on paper may still be too close to one of the booked tests. Use the free 10 working day checker before trying to move forward with a possible exchange.

What not to share

Be careful with Facebook posts, WhatsApp groups and direct messages. You should not casually share sensitive booking information with strangers online.

  • Do not share your DVSA login.
  • Do not post your driving licence number.
  • Do not post your theory certificate number.
  • Do not send payment card details.
  • Do not pay a stranger for a test slot.

Why later-date learners matter

Most people search for earlier driving tests. But a test date exchange only works if someone else has an earlier test and wants a later one.

If your test is too soon and you are not ready, you may be the missing side of the marketplace. Your earlier date may help someone else move forward while you gain more preparation time.

Read the test-too-soon guide.

Why this guide is useful for driving instructors

Instructors often deal with pupils who are not ready for a test or who are anxious about a date that is too close. This guide gives pupils a safer explanation of swaps, timing, privacy and what not to share online.

Driving schools are welcome to link to this guide as a learner safety resource. If you would like a shorter version for your pupils, see the instructor resource page.

Common questions

Can you swap driving tests with another learner?

DVSA guidance allows learners to swap their own car driving test with another learner if both learners want each other's exact test date, time and centre, and the request is made with enough notice.

Can Exchange Driving Tests swap it for me?

No. Exchange Driving Tests only helps identify possible learner-to-learner matches. It does not access DVSA, book tests, change tests, cancel tests or complete swaps.

Does a possible match guarantee a successful swap?

No. A possible match still needs both learners to agree and to follow the official DVSA process themselves.

Why is the site free?

The project is being run as a free pilot to build trust, test demand and avoid pressure around paid test slots.

Want to check for a possible test date exchange?

Submit your practical test details for free. Your listing is manually reviewed, your email is not displayed publicly, and no details are shared unless both learners agree first.
